I am a huge fan of independent pattern designers. I actually have never sewn a “big 4” pattern so independent patterns are all I know. I love finding new designers and new patterns and this is no exception. I had no doubt that in my journey to find the perfect t-shirt, I would find new things along the way and that’s exactly what this is. I found the Friday Pattern Company on Instagram on Saturday night and it was an immediate purchase –> print out –> tape together –> cut and sew in just a few hours.
I had never heard of the Friday Pattern Company until last weekend but I was reading about them on their website and found them pretty interesting. They are an independent pattern design company from California who “believe in making good things and doing good things! For that reason, Friday Pattern Company donates 5% of all proceeds to a rotating collection of the top-ranked charities in the world. Each pattern benefits a different charity.” What a cool concept! 5% of the Sunny Pattern sales go to the Against Malaria Foundation.
The Sunny Dress and Top is a reversible scoop neck or crew neck dress and top pattern with an hourglass silhouette. It features set in sleeves and a really pretty scalloped hemline.
The instructions were very clear and easy to follow – and the pattern is designated as “easy” and I think that’s totally accurate! I did change a few things about the pattern – I added an easy neckband to it instead of using knit binding and decided not to hem the bottom. The pattern recommends knit binding for the neckband and the hem because of the curved feature of the hem, but I didn’t have any knit binding (and actually have never seen that before – can anyone point me towards some?).
I used a brushed poly knit from LA Finch Fabrics that I’ve had my eye on for a while. I am obsessed with elephants and can never pass up an elephant print. I wanted to try out their brushed poly knit and I really liked it! It has a really buttery feeling to the touch which makes it very comfortable. I made it on Saturday night and wore it all day at a workshop at Stitch on Sunday and it was so comfortable and easy to wear.
I also sewed up the top version of the Sunny Dress and Top thinking if I would love it! Unfortunately, the top is super short – so it didn’t get photographed, but it shares a similar beautiful silhouette as the dress, just needed 4″ for me to feel comfortable!
Because this is offered as a top and a dress, I felt like it was worth comparing for the perfect t-shirt series. So here’s the crucial stats:
Size Chosen: I sewed up the medium with has measurements of 36-37, 28-30, 39-40 and my measurements are 36, 29, 39.
The Variations Offered: It comes as a top or a dress with only one neckline option (scoop neck)
Ease of Construction: Easy! I used my sewing machine to sew all of the dress and it came together really quickly.
The Fit: This to me is the perfect t-shirt dress. So many t-shirt dresses are much looser through the waist and hips and this really is a more fitted dress and I like it a lot! The scoop neck wasn’t too deep for my liking either.
All and all, this was a win! I am curious to try out other Friday Pattern Company Patterns – This Double Breasted Hoodie is coming out this month and looks so cute and the Square Neck Top looks like another winner.
