After reflecting back on 2017 yesterday, I wanted to think about 5 overarching goals for my sewing in 2018. While these are goals, they are also overarching themes for me to keep in the front of my mind over the course of the next year while approaching my sewing.
One | Work on fitting garments better
Usually I don’t have tons of fitting issues, but I do think I could do a better job of making muslins of things and addressing some simple fit items. One part of this goal is taking some time and understandng the it process. I think I want to try to take some Craftsy courses in the new year. While I was putting together this blog post, I saw that they now have a Craftsy Unlimited subscription. Maybe I’ll give that a go?
Some classes I’d like to take are the Bodice Sloper class, and the two Palmer/Pletsch classes on Shirts and Tops and Pants.
Two | Sew the “perfect” pair of jeans
I’ve sewn a bunch of different pairs of jeans and while I do think they fit, I think they could fit better. I also think trying to find the denim that I really love has been more challenging than expected as well. I’d like to take a little bit of time each month or couple of months to try to focus on my jean making.
Three | Continue adding wearable pieces of clothing to my handmade wardrobe
In 2017, I added over 96 garments to my handmade wardrobe. Most of which, I wear a lot of. I want to make more garments in 2018 and continue to add garments that fit into my daily wardrobe. It also means perfecting the fit process so these garments fit as good as they are supposed to! I am excited to participate in challenges like #SewMyStyle and #2018MakeNine to get that party started.
Four | Sew a Quilt!
This one is kinda out of left field but I have always wanted to sew a quilt. My cousin made me a quilt a couple years ago and I love it so much. I would love to have a second quilt around the house.
Five | Slow down and enjoy the process
I was reading Stitch Sew Shop’s newsletter last week and she talked about how it’s so important to enjoy the process no matter what the task at hand is. I sometimes am in such a hurry to complete a garment to get it photographed and on the blog that I forget to enjoy the process. I also forget to take a breather and slow down. So this is something I want to focus on in all aspects of my life this year – just take a deep breath and enjoy the process!
What are your 2018 sewing goals? I would love to cheer you along in your goals too!

I like your goals Lara – slowing down especially 🙂 I’ve joined the RTW Fast 2018 with Sara Gunn so if I need something I’m just going to have to make it! I’m already starting on sleeveless blouses for the summer because I know I’m going to need some of those – I don’t own one! I’d like a few – out of linen and a couple of silk ones for good measure. I also could use a cardigan or 2 – I only have one of those. So this challenge has already directed my sewing goals but making me look (a little anxiously!) at my closet and what I’m missing or could use more of!
I do suggest Craftsy subscription, I did that to check out what classes I actually want to buy.
Like your goals, espetially enjoying sewing process…
